A Raisin in the Sun Independent Project 2010

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ASKING ANY QUESTIONS: This final project is to be completed independently. You may be as creative as you like for this endeavor. As long as you cover the criteria listed for your product choice, you are in good shape. Don't worry about doing something "right" or "wrong". Part of the excitement here is going off on your own with less teacher support than you're accustomed to. Obviously, my evaluation of your work will take into account the fact that you are working on your own.

 

For this last leg of your study of A Raisin in the Sun, you will create a final project on which you'll work independently. The product choices given are all electronic. If, for any reason, you'd prefer to go low-tech, please feel free to email me, and we'll discuss an alternative. Please let me know as soon as possible which project you choose.

 

Choose one of the following, or create your own (teacher approval required):

Wikified Essays: You will create a wiki on pbworks.com and write a brief research paper on one of the following topics. Rather than cite your sources you will link them to articles, websites, photos, videos, etc. that support your ideas.

  1. Research restrictive covenant laws in Chicago real estate and/or the history of the Black Belt (the area of Chicago in which most African Americans lived). In addition to any pertinent information you find, try to include information on the following ideas:

a. Bombing of black houses

b. racial maps of chicago (then and now, if possible)

c. How does what you learned relate to the play?

 

OR

  2. Research Nigeria. Include:

a. Brief cultural/political history

b. Food

c. Clothing

d. Art

e. Influences on modern culture

f. How do these ideas connect to the play?

 

As soon as the privacy settings are changed, I will post examples from last year, so you can see what a wikified essay looks like.

 

Create a Scrapblog.com symbolism project.

Make one scrapbook page for five of the following six symbols from the play:

      • plant
      • window
      • garden
      • raisin
      • Beneatha’s hair
      • eggs

For each symbol, you should have:

  • Pictures (at least one)
  • Explanation of what the symbol means, what big ideas the symbol represents
  • Scenes/quotes to support your ideas (if you use quotes, please include page numbers)

 

Last, create one more page on which you make up your own symbol to represent a theme in the play. On that page you should have: 

  • Picture of the object
  • Explanation of how the object represents a particular theme
  • Evidence from the play to support your ideas
  1. Create a character analysis Glogster.com poster
    1. Choose a character and trace how that character changes in the play.
    2. Choose the most important moments for the character and find graphics (pictures, videos, voicethreads, any linkable media) to represent those scenes/moments.
    3. With the visual media, write explanations that include:

a. What makes the moment important?

b. What do we learn about the character?

c. What generalizations can you make about the character?


Create GoAnimate.com product in which you write and animate a scene (with explanation) that does not appear in the play. Possibilities:

      1. After they move
      2. Walter at work
      3. Beneatha’s date with George
      4. Ruth at the doctor
      5. Mama with her husband
