Things to note, as you watch:
- The aerial shots show the size of Dachau, which was the first concentration camp built and the prototype for all other Nazi camps. Though it looks large, it was very small in comparison to Auschwitz. An estimated 32,000 were killed at Dachau, while an estimated 1.1 million were killed at Auschwitz.
- You will notice well dressed men and women in the footage. At each of the liberated camps, Allied Forces brought local townspeople in to see the atrocities their own government perpetrated.
- In showing the process used to get prisoners into the gas chambers, you will see prisoners' clothing hung up on racks. Great care was taken by the Nazis to convince the prisoners that they were going into showers to be deloused. In doing so, they ensured that prisoners would go into the chambers willingly, without panic. Nazis had learned from past experience that, when they knew they were heading to their deaths, prisoners would riot and rebel, making their extermination harder to manage.
