To Kill a Mockingbird and A Raisin in the Sun

  • How does gender identity play a role in each book?
  • What are each character's beliefs when it comes to gender identity?

 

Below is the Voicethread our TKAM/Raisin students used to discuss some of the ideas of gender identity in our society. Here is a link the the Voicethread if you want a larger screen view.

 

 

New Plan:

 

Each of you will create your own wiki (register on pbwiki) and link it to this page.

 

Option 1:

On this wiki, you will write a response to our gender identity topic. In this written response you will discuss:

  • Walter's ideas of manhood.
  • A critique of his ideas. In what ways does he get it right? In what ways does he get it wrong?
  • How does his notion of what a man needs to do/be differ from that of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird?
  • Which ideas still pervade our thinking today? What evidence exists in our culture to support this?
  • How do these ideas affect boys today? What pressures do they face?
  • How do these ideas affect you?

Your written response will include specific examples from the books and links to media and websites that support each of your ideas. These can be pictures, essays, articles, websites, etc. They should be linked within the body of the response, where appropriate, rather than in a list at the end/beginning. If you want to embed a video, please remember that we can't watch youtube from school. However, if you find a video (while at home) on youtube or a similar site, you can go to zamzar.com and follow the instructions to convert the youtube video into a .mov file, which zamar will email to you. Then you can embed from your desktop.

  • How Lorraine Hansberry (the playwright) uses different characters in A Raisin in the Sun to show different ideals of what it means to be a woman.

Evaluation Criteria:

You will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Does your response demonstrate an understanding of the gender identity theme in both A Raisin in the Sun and To Kill a Mockingbird? (Points to consider: How do the authors use the characters to make certain points about gender? How do the characters reflect or critique gender stereotypes? Are the ideals of each gender, as shown in the books, well-founded, misguided, or a combination?)
  2. Does your response demonstrate an understanding of how the ideals and stereotypes of gender still pervade today's culture? (Points to consider: In what ways do we still have the same ideas as those in the books? In what ways have gender ideals/stereotypes changed or evolved?)
  3. Does your response answer the question: So what? (In other words, do you apply these ideas to your life and the lives of your contemporaries and reflect on their impact?)
  4. Do you make your points clearly and articulately? (Are the examples you use appropriate to make your points? Is the media linked to your wiki effective? Is the writing clear, concise, and free from distracting errors of spelling, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc.?)
  5. Do you include media in your response and link them in the appropriate places?

 

#1 - 3 will each count for approximately 25% (totaling 75%) of the project.

#4 & 5 will have a combined total of 25% of the project.
